3 Essential SEO Tips

Everyone wants to know how to get their website to the top of Google; as a company that designs websites - we hear it all the time. Without a doubt, search engine optimization is critical if you want to move up the rankings in Google’s listings. More importantly, good SEO markets your company’s products and services.

Below are 3 extremely valuable SEO tips to work your way up the search rankings:

1. Content is King

Bill Gates said it, and well, enough said. We've done a write up about this before and you can read it here.

Search engines are answer machines. Google especially prides itself on answering your queries with the most useful and relevant results the internet has to offer. Thus, what your content says – matters. In addition to being your company’s persona online, your words tell search engines what you do and index the results accordingly.

  • Your home page and every page on your website should contain keywords that your customers would be likely to search for. This includes your headline. Some search engines, particularly those ignoring meta- tags, will use the first few lines of text (including your headline) as your site description.

So if you’re drafting copy for your homepage and start writing “residential food cooling units” rather than simply writing “refrigerator” – go with the latter. You want to speak the language of your customers.

2. Your Title Tag is Critical

Your title tag is the most important piece of content for people looking for an answer to a question on the web. Provide a solution to their query in your title tag. Be concise.

  • Try to keep it under 60 characters (with spaces), which is roughly 8 to 10 words.
  • Lead with your most important keywords for that particular page. Always start with what is specific about the content on that page and then move to what is general.

Don’t bury your keywords behind your branding.

3. Optimize Your Images

As brilliant as search engines are, they’re not like us humans who can see images and watch videos. That’s why, including “alt” image attribute tags allows you the opportunity to get keywords in that the search engines can read and index while they’re crawling the web.

  • “Alt” image tags allow the search engines to ‘see’ your site’s images by providing a descriptive element that contains the keywords you’ve attached.
  • For videos, include transcripts so the search bots can ‘watch’ the awesome content on your videos.

The written words will again signal the search engine robots to scan your material and index what is relevant for your existing and potential customers.
