Creating Content - How to Know What to Write This Month
Nailing down what to write is a problem faced by bloggers, small business owners, and content teams alike. It’s legit – especially given that creating content and maintaining your blog is synonymous with amplifying your website’s SEO endeavours.
Supposing you’re not the type that thinks your next cup of coffee will summon the muse and your fingers will magically type away your next stellar piece of content, here are a few humble suggestions that may inspire your next post.
Chances are you know more than the average Joe about your industry or your niche topic – otherwise, you probably wouldn’t be in business or have a blog. Share it with others. As my friend Anton says, “sharing means caring”. Not only does it provide you with something to write about, but it shows that you are authentic and that you care about your customers, your work and yourself.
I would rather hire a landscaper who writes confidently about flowers and stonework in his blog than the guy whose website just says, “I’m a landscaper; hire me.” But again, that’s just me writing what I know I would do.
Just answer the questions already! Those frequently asked questions can be the next five or ten articles you write about. This goes along with the former tip - when you find yourself answering the same questions over and over again – it’s probably because people value your insight. By writing it down, you have yourself your next piece of content and you also provide a unique and useful article for the search engines to crawl to boost your SEO.
Write about the tricks of your trade, tips you’ve hoarded through your experience, and teach via tutorials. People love “how to” articles that teach them, pretty much anything. What you excel at, someone may have zero knowledge of. Write a “how to” guide that brings things back to basics. Keep in mind that you don’t want to shame, confuse, or impress your audience with fancy industry speak – talk their language.
The beauty of the World Wide Web is that it links us to information that otherwise would have only been accessed through an encyclopedia before. That information provides a wealth of potential material for you to write your next piece on. You can quote others and comment on their take – supposing yours is different. Or elaborate further on the topic. Or you can consolidate a list of links that you think your audience will find relevant and tell them why these links matter. Sharing still means caring and that means if someone else has already written something of value on the net – you should share.
Write on, folks. Write on. I once had a professor tell me that ‘to say you have writer’s block is a whole lot of pretentiousness—just write.’ Write, write, write, and then edit profusely. I’ve never forgotten that—probably because it works.
